Governors delay expulsion decision
School playground
Boys account for 84% of exclusions
Parents at a Walsall school have reacted angrily after school officials refused to discuss the case of an 11-year-old boy who has been expelled for violence.

A meeting of the school governors at Leighswood Primary in Aldridge on Monday failed to make a final decision on the boy, who was excluded by the head teacher on 21 November.

He was previously excluded for 12 weeks following an incident in which a boy was punched in the face.

The parents were told the expulsion had yet to be ratified by the school governors and the boy then had a right to appeal.

If this boy is allowed back there's going to be a massive walkout

One of the parents at last night's meeting, Helen Grice, said many parents are feeling frustrated about the situation.

"I am totally gutted because nothing has happened. He should be going to a school that can cater for his problems."

The MP for Aldridge and Brownhills, Richard Shepherd, is supporting the parents.

Mrs Grice, who has twin boys at the school, said earlier that she was "absolutely appalled" at the prospect of the boy returning.

Previous protest

Mrs Grice said: "If this boy is allowed back there's going to be a massive walkout.

"I will find another school for my lads because this is an important year for them."

Forty parents kept their children out of Leighswood Primary in Aldridge in a previous show of protest.

A petition containing nearly 150 names is being handed to the local education authority.

Figures from the Department for Education and Skills for 1999-2000 show that boys account for 84% of exclusions in both secondary and primary schools in England and Wales.

The local education authority said it is supporting the school.
