 | | Saturday, 24 November, 2001, 04:42 GMT Lord Hamlyn leaves �200m to charity  Lord Hamlyn made his fortune in publishing The publisher and philanthropist Lord Hamlyn has left more than �200m to the foundation he set up in 1987. The Paul Hamlyn Foundation supports arts and educational projects to help young people. Lord Hamlyn died, aged 75, in August this year at London's Royal Marsden Hospital. He had been a major contributor of funds to the arts, and to the Labour Party.
The foundation was established to address issues on inequality and disadvantage, particularly in relation to young people. It supports projects in the UK and also local development projects in India. Patricia Lankester, a Director of The Paul Hamlyn Foundation, said: "The Foundation will use this donation, which will be in excess of �200m, to benefit the good causes supported by Lord Hamlyn during his lifetime. "He wanted the Foundation to continue with its primary role of supporting the new, the challenging and the different in order to create a more equitable and just society." Publishing success Lord Hamlyn founded several publishing companies since starting Books for Pleasure in 1949. He started the successful Hamlyn Publishing Group in 1968 and bought it back from Reed International in 1986. Lord Hamlyn also founded Music for Pleasure in 1965 as a joint venture with EMI. He made his fortune by breaking the publishing mould and selling mass-market books cheaply.
