The National Union of Students (NUS) says many people from low income households can no longer consider university as an option. Students are calling for the return of student grants and the abolition of fees. Adam Busby, of the South West Area NUS said: "We are using this day as a way of getting the message across to the public and the government. Financial struggle "It is not fair to expect students to cope with such large debts on graduation." Student debt in the UK currently stands at 5bn. Many are forced to work long hours in paid work to make ends meet, and as a result their grades suffer. According to the NUS, the prospect of such a financial struggle is putting many people from poorer backgrounds off going to university altogether. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||
