A four-year-old girl has drowned at a special needs school in Lancashire.

Emergency services were called to Woodlands School in Blackpool on Tuesday afternoon.

Attempts were made to revive the girl, but she later died at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

A joint investigation has been launched by the police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and a post mortem is due to be carried out.

Details of the incident are unclear

A spokesman for the HSE confirmed that inquiries into what had happened at the school on Whitegate Drive were under way.

The spokesman added that it was too early to comment on the details.

The school specialises in caring for children with learning difficulties.

It educates boys and girls aged between two and 19 years old, and prides itself on its "caring ethos and excellent resources".

The dead girl, who is from the Blackpool area, has not been named.
