Children in hospital after firework explodes
Fireworks
The firework went off in a public park
Six children are in hospital being treated for burns after a large firework exploded in their faces in Birmingham.

Three of the children were said to have suffered serious injuries.

The most badly hurt, a boy aged 12, has been transferred from Selly Oak Hospital to the city's children's hospital where his condition was described as "stable".

The children, aged between 12 and 15, were in a park at Small Heath when they are believed to have gathered round a firework left over from a display the previous evening.

The condition of the children at Selly Oak Hospital on Sunday was described as "comfortable".

A seventh child who was also injured has been allowed home.

'Holding faces'

The incident happened on Saturday afternoon in a park next to a football pitch at the Acker's Trust.

Station officer Patrick Lynch
The fire service said the firework was very powerful

Paramedics were called to the scene and the children were taken to hospital by ambulance.

One witness told BBC's Midlands Today that he heard a loud bang.

"I saw some kids walking out holding their faces and dropping to their knees.

Commercial firework

"Everyone ran over to them and all we saw was lots of blood and we had to throw water on their faces and ring for an ambulance."

The fire service says the fireworks were for commercial use and should have been disposed of safely.

Station officer Patrick Lynch said: "This firework had been lit earlier and had failed to go off.

"These are very powerful fireworks because they are display but any firework that is partially-exploded, if you try to light it, may go off again."

He added: "In this case they were all looking into the firework and it went off into their faces."
