| Saturday, 3 November, 2001, 18:13 GMT Seven children hurt by firework ![]() The firework went off in a public park Seven children are in a Birmingham hospital with burns after a large display firework exploded in their faces. Three of the children suffered serious injuries. The incident took place around 1230 BST on Saturday in a public park next to a well-used football pitch at the Acker's Trust in Small Heath, Birmingham. It is believed the unexploded firework had been left in the park after a display on Friday evening. Paramedics were called to the scene around 1230 BST and the children were taken to Selly Oak Hospital where they were being treated for burn injuries. Commercial fireworks One witness told BBC's Midlands Today that he heard a loud bang. "I saw some kids walking out holding their faces and dropping to their knees.
"Everyone ran over to them and all we saw was lots of blood and we had to throw water on their faces and ring for an ambulance." The fire service says the fireworks were for commercial use and should have been disposed of safely. Station officer Patrick Lynch said: "This firework had been lit earlier and had failed to go off. "These are very powerful fireworks because they are display but any firework that is partially-exploded, if you try to light it, may go off again." He added: "In this case they were all looking into the firework and it went off into their faces." All seven children were being treated at Selly Oak Hospital. | Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
