| Thursday, 1 November, 2001, 09:42 GMT Project success brings traffic problems ![]() The Eden Project attracted 7,000 visitors to its opening The traffic problems which have come with the success of a Cornish environmental project will be discussed at a meeting on Thursday. The Eden Project was built to recreate the Earth's different climates. Its huge domes, called biomes, are located in a former clay pit near St Austell. Each biome houses thousands of different plant species and some animals. But the volume of people visiting the biomes has caused massive queues and tailbacks on the area's roads.
Calling itself "a gateway into the world of plants and people", the Eden Project aims to show how sustainable development depends on plants. The project has transformed tourism in mid-Cornwall and brought jobs and prosperity to many businesses. But traffic problems have also come with the success. Clay company Imerys said it had difficulties with transportation in the area. Journey times An Imerys spokesman said: "Traffic movements during the peak summer months have been particularly problematical. "We've been at times having to add almost 30 minutes on journey times and this on a schedule which is tight anyway is a considerable problem." A spokesman for the Eden Project said: "Eden has been blessed with popularity from day one, but I do not think any of us expected this." Representatives from the Eden Project, the highways department and the police will attend the meeting at the Restormel Borough Council offices to discuss the problems. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
