| Wednesday, 24 October, 2001, 17:45 GMT 18:45 UK Crackdown on 'trick or treat' eggs ![]() Eggsellers are being asked to be on the lookout An outbreak of egg-throwing has led police in Cornwall to ask shopkeepers not to sell eggs to children and young people in the run-up to Halloween. And officers in Bath are investigating reports that local people - including a tap dancing group - have been pelted with eggs. Police say the American tradition of "Trick or Treating" has resulted in many people having eggs thrown at them and their property. The call to shopkeepers to prevent sales of eggs to young people is part of the Devon and Cornwall Police initiative Operation Aware, which aims to minimise the amount of disruption caused by "Trick or Treat" activities. The initiative was started six years ago after local health workers reported a rise in the number of people claiming to be distressed by the actions of youngsters.
PC Tim Roberts of the Kerrier Police Community Team said: "Most of the young people are well-behaved and accompanied by an adult. This is to be recommended, particularly for the safety of the children. "But anyone who intends to be out "Trick or Treating" should be considerate to those who do not wish to be involved." The police will have a number of dedicated patrols out for the evening and say that any offences that are reported on Halloween will be dealt with appropriately. Egg attacks In Bath, a spate of egg-throwing in the Odd Down area of the city has caused nuisance for some local people. One officer, PC Roger Hawke, has said that young people are getting hold of "copious" amounts of eggs and throwing them. At one stage, a group of tap dancers in a local hall were attacked when eggs were thrown in through an open window and door. PC Hawke said he was asking local egg sellers and shopkeepers to look out for youngsters buying eggs in large quantities. PC Hawke said: "It has to stop because it's getting out of control." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
