MP tackles wrecked cars
A car on fire
MP Graham Allen wants wrecked cars removed quickly
A Nottinghamshire MP is aiming to have wrecked cars removed from roads more quickly than the current seven-day deadline.

Police forces across the country say abandoned and burnt-out cars have become a dangerous nuisance on many estates.

Nottingham North MP Graham Allen said there is a realistic chance of getting legislation passed.

Mr Allen, a Labour MP, said there will be a special parliamentary debate.

Rusted, wrecked cars
Abandoned cars are a major nuisance

He said: "The scrap value for abandoned cars has gone down so more and more people are abandoning cars on the street.

"The kids are taking them away for joyriding, then another bunch of kids smashes them up, then another bunch sets light to them.

Modern eyesores

"It is becoming a really serious problem, but one that can be addressed with just a few simple changes to the law."

Nottingham city council leader Graham Chapman is frustrated that the law does not allow such wrecks to be removed straight away.

He said there should be pressure on the government to change the law.

He said that if ministers are sympathetic, new measures will help eradicate a modern eyesore much quicker in the future.
