| Thursday, 11 October, 2001, 13:09 GMT 14:09 UK Dockland scheme refloated ![]() The redevelopment covers a 20-acre site Part of a 450m scheme to redevelop Bristol harbour seems likely to be approved at the third attempt. Councillors are expected to grant outline planning permission for the proposals which would transform the heart of the city, providing cafe-lined walkways and a leisure centre. The expected decision comes after widespread public opposition to the initial plans put forward by developer Crest Nicholson. City leaders said the scaled-down version of the plans struck a better balance between modern redevelopment and protecting historical sites in the city centre. Parisian boulevards Planners have called the scheme "one of the best but most difficult regeneration sites in the country". The plans involve the construction or refurbishment of a dozen buildings on a 20-acre site in the city's docklands. A new leisure centre, which may include a cinema, along with office and residential blocks linked by Parisian-style boulevards with cafes and restaurants are included in the proposals. John Savage, chairman of Bristol Harbourside Sponsors Group, said: "It's an essential part of one of the best cities in Europe. "It needs to be developed. I accept the original plans were not good enough but now we have something we can work with."
More than 500 people objected to previous proposals largely because they claimed the redevelopment obscured views of Bristol Cathedral and SS Great Britain. But in a large public consultation exercise over the latest proposals, only 150 people raised concerns and most admitted the plans were a major improvement. Former dockworker, Jim Dallimore, said it was time for change. New era "Thirty years ago there would have been a lot of dockers here, a few cafes, a lot of activity, men going to work, all hustle and bustle. "I think it's a great idea. You've got to go with the times. "The docks are finished and they've got a nice harbour, a nice cinema planned." The plans will be considered at a special meeting of the development control committee of the council on Wednesday, 17 October. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
