 | | Friday, 5 October, 2001, 07:57 GMT 08:57 UK Fishermen oppose surfers' reef  A �1.8m surf centre is planned at Fistral beach Fishermen in Newquay are opposing plans for an artificial reef off the town's coastline. They fear it will make it impossible to work out of the town's harbour. The reef is part of a proposed �1.8m surfing centre on Fistral Beach. Restormel Council wants to bring in private operators to build tourist facilities to rival facilities at top French resorts. The reef proposal has been put to Cornwall's sea fisheries committee for a response.
It says it is concerned the reef would lead to a build-up of sand in the harbour, which would make it impossible for them to work there. A tourist information office and surf history museum are among the attractions planned as part of Fistral Beach International Surfing Centre. The complex will also house a restaurant, cr�che, hire centre, beach cafe, toilets and changing rooms. It is hoped the centre will bring in an extra 15,000 visitors and another five international events and competitions to the Cornish resort each year. It should also generate an estimated �450,000 a year for Newquay and create 25 jobs.
