Police chief attacks 'drugs poison'
Graham Moore
The chief constable said five types of drug were seized
West Yorkshire Police have arrested 226 people and recovered drugs with a street value of 20,000 in a six-month campaign against drug-dealers.

Chief Constable Graham Moore said the long-running narcotics operation had recovered heroin, ecstasy, crack cocaine, amphetamine and cannabis.

In the final two weeks of the campaign, more than 100 separate raids were carried out and 700 officers searched 150 addresses.

Mr Moore said: "Drugs are a poison in society and a priority crime for the police service. They destroy lives and tear families apart.

Crack cocaine

"During this operation we are actively targeting dealers, those who profit from this tragedy.

"Future operations will ensure we maintain the pressure on those dealing in drugs. The message is clear - if you are involved in drugs you will be caught."

Among the drugs police seized were 250 cannabis plants, over 220 rocks of crack cocaine and 420 ecstasy tablets.

Searches also uncovered three firearms, an electric stun gun, nitro-glycerine and three canisters of CS spray.

Those arrested range in age from 17 to 67.

Thirty people were arrested in Bradford, 121 in Leeds, 14 in Halifax, 56 in Kirklees, and five in Wakefield.

So far there have been more than 80 charges including possession with intent to supply, possession of drugs, and possession of an offensive weapon.

A number of people have been bailed pending further enquiries.
