Marathon man keeps on runnin'
London Marathon race
Rory Coleman has run in five London marathons
A Derbyshire man who cannot stop running has finished his 300th marathon.

Rory Coleman, 39, from Long Eaton, Derbyshire, started running seven years ago after giving up smoking.

He ran the Robin Hood Marathon in Nottingham on Saturday 30 September in four hours and 20 minutes.

"I feel like I have run through a real threshold. It was raining and wet, but a really emotional experience," Mr Coleman told BBC News Online.

His time was one hour and 45 minutes slower than winner Jamie Jones of Hampshire.

Mr Coleman, who ran the race dressed in a top hat and tails, has run in marathons in New York, London, Helsinki and Morocco.

He once ran a 100-mile endurance race in Jordan from Wadi Rum to Petra.

He plans to run to a special route to all the premiership football grounds in England next year, starting in Southampton and finishing in Newcastle.

The run, in conjunction with the anti-smoking group Quit, will start in March 2002 and cover a marathon distance each day.

Treadmill record

"I'm addicted to the endorphins of running," he said, adding that he quit smoking in 1994 and started running "to clean out his system."

The Nottingham race, the third largest marathon in the UK, attracted 9,500 runners this year.

Nottingham runner Mandy Spink was the fastest female runner for the third year in a row with a time of two hours and 45 minutes.

Mr Coleman not only runs road races, but also spends hours running on a treadmill to raise money for charity.

He holds several Guiness World Book records, including the longest distance covered on a treadmill in a week - 280 miles.

Mr Coleman said he has covered more than 25,000 miles while running in the past seven years.

He plans to run in the Quorn marathon in Leicestershire next week.
