| Thursday, 27 September, 2001, 11:40 GMT 12:40 UK Clean up for Sherwood dump ![]() Hundreds of cars are dumped in Sherwood Forest Part of Sherwood Forest labelled a "war zone" could be turned into an off-road biking haven. There are fears for safety as hundreds of bikers meet illegally in the forest at weekends riding near walkers, cyclists and horse riders. In the area are more than 100 burnt-out and rusting cars which foresters say are an eyesore and a health hazard. Now environmentalists, the police and Nottinghamshire County Council have come together to sort out the problems.
Eakring Road, which leads to the dumping ground, could also be closed to bikes and cars. Mark Crowley, a Forestry Commission forester at Sherwood, said: "It is a major problem. It is like a war zone with burnt out cars and wrecks. "There is also fly-tipping with old beds, washing machines and rubble - you name it, it is there. It is a thoroughly unpleasant place.
"Some of the material that comes off the cars is pretty horrendous. "The motorbikes are different. There is nuisance with the noise and dangers of them running into people or horses and causing accidents." Inspector Dave Shardlow of Nottinghamshire police said the dumped cars were a danger. "We think there is in excess of 100 to 120 vehicles in all and they're coming all the time." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
