| Wednesday, 26 September, 2001, 15:46 GMT 16:46 UK Bridge no longer 'in the swing' ![]() Engineers were called in to fix the Princes Street bridge An impromptu ferry service began across the River Avon in Bristol on Wednesday when a swing bridge became stuck. The Prince Street bridge, in the city's refurbished docks area, jammed in the "open to shipping" position. Traffic to and from the city centre came to a standstill as vehicles waited in vain for the bridge to swing back. As it is the only way to cross the river without a long walk, pedestrians looked for an alternative.
They turned to the city's sightseeing ferries and paid to be taken across the water. Bristol City Council brought in engineers to fix the bridge, which it expects to reopen to traffic on Thursday. All traffic and cyclists have been asked to find an alternative route until then. The council has funded a free ferry service which will operate until midnight on Wednesday and from 0630 BST on Thursday until the bridge is fixed. In a statement it apologised for the inconvenience and asked people to be patient. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
