The owner of a nuclear bunker in Essex has revealed he has received requests to book places following the attacks in America.

Michael Parrish said he was considering two "serious offers" for accommodation at the bunker in Klevedon Hatch and expected more to follow.

Places within the bunker cost �30,000 each.

Mr Parrish said he had received requests from people worried about a nuclear war but denied that he was being alarmist.

He insisted: "I'm not scare-mongering.

"I'm just being sensible. I've already had two serious offers and I would expect more.

Tourist attraction

"I shall interview people to see if they are suitable before making any decisions."

The bunker, which is now a tourist attraction, was built in during the Cold War in 1952.

It was intended to be a base for regional government in the event of a state of emergency being declared.

The bunker, which can hold about 250 people, is 80 feet deep, has 10 feet thick walls and has been built over three floors of rooms 100 foot under a hill between Brentwood, Romford and Ongar.

Dormitories, an air filtration plant, canteen, telephone exchange and a BBC studio have also been built into the bunker.

Places are on a first-come-first-served basis and Mr Parrish said that �30,000 would reserve one for 10 years.
