| Tuesday, 25 September, 2001, 14:44 GMT 15:44 UK 'Mum punched Lauren', says son ![]() Lauren Wright was "forced to stand in front of a fire" The son of a woman accused of killing her stepdaughter told a jury that he saw his mother punch the six-year-old twice in the stomach on the day she died. The nine-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said Tracey Wright forced him and Lauren Wright to stand in front of a fire on a number of occasions. Lauren died at her home in Welney, Norfolk, on 6 May last year. The prosecution allege she was struck in the stomach, causing her digestive system to collapse. Broke down Tracey Wright, 31, and Lauren's natural father, Craig Wright, 38, both deny manslaughter and wilful neglect. On Tuesday, the jury at Norwich Crown Court watched a 40-minute video of an interview with the boy taken last January.
During the interview, conducted by a female police officer and social worker, the boy said: "The day Lauren died, I remember mum punching her in the belly two times. "I was going to go to the toilet, and I see mummy punch her in the belly two times." The boy, who broke down several times during the interview, said Lauren was in the bedroom she shared with Tracey Wright's daughter when the alleged incident occurred. He said that Tracey Wright used to punch him and Lauren, but did not hit his sister. He added that he and Lauren were punched on the shoulder and back "more than once" and said this made him feel "sad". Bugs in food The police officer asked if there were other things his mother had done, and the boy said: "She used to put us in front of the fire."
He added they were put in front of the coal fire "more than once" and for "a long time". The boy said his mother took "bugs" from the garden and put them in Lauren's food. He said Lauren did not know the insects were in her meals. His mother would also make Lauren stand in the living room until her father returned home from work. He said: "Mum would tell him to smack Lauren." 'Needed ambulance' When asked if Craig Wright then did so, the boy said he would "slap Lauren on the bum". After his mother punched Lauren, the boy said a lady called for an ambulance and Tracey Wright "pretended" that she had not "done it." He said: "Mum told her that she was really poorly and that she thought she needed the ambulance because she thought she was dead. "The lady said 'how did it happen?' and she said 'I don't know'." The jury at Norwich Crown Court also watched a second video interview with the boy, which was recorded on 20 September this year. Video link Asked if he could remember how he felt on the day Lauren died, he said: "I was sad." Asked how he now felt about what happened, he said: "Not very happy." During the hearing, a live video link was in place between the court and another room, where the boy was sitting with a member of court staff. He watched the videos at the same time as the jury and was able to see the face of the person who was speaking to him in the court. Judge David Mellor, defence and prosecuting QCs, all removed their wigs during the hearing. The trial continues. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
