Schools are better prepared for drug incidents
Schools have improved their efforts to teach children about the dangers of drugs, say inspectors.

On the day that the Conservative Party conference has heard calls for "zero tolerance" on drugs, the Office for Standards in Education says that the number of schools with effective drug education schemes has "increased significantly" in the last two years.

93% secondary schools have drug education policies
75% primary schools have drug education policies
Police assist drug education in 64% secondary schools
Five hours a year average drug lessons for older primary pupils

There are now 93% of secondary schools and 75% of primary schools with drug education policies in place, say a report from inspectors.

And in the upper years of primary school, children are receiving an average of almost five hours a year of drug education lessons.

But less than half of primary schools have made advance preparations for dealing with drug incidents in the school - compared with the 95% of secondary schools which have procedures in place.

The report, which provides an overview of how well children are being taught about drugs, says that inspectors were satisfied by the level of teaching in both primary and secondary schools.

Inspectors found that many schools used the police to help with their lessons about drugs, with 39% of primary schools and 64% of secondary schools involving the police in providing advice or giving talks.
