A-level results: What next?

Thousands of students received their A and AS-level results on Thursday. Competition for UK university places is tougher this year, there are around 60,000 more applicants which is a 10% rise on 2008. Not every student has managed to secure the place that they hoped for.

Now they have their results, these A-level students told us what they plan to do next.

Beth Langford is over the moon about her A-level grades.

They are better than she expected and she secured a place at her first choice of university.

Along with two As and a B, results day is also Beth's birthday so she has double reason to celebrate.

Emily Poore from Derby High School was taken ill during her exams and was very nervous about getting her results.

She got higher grades than she needed for a place at her first choice of university, where she wanted to study Archaeology and Social Anthropology, but was rejected so is currently feeling a bit deflated.

Alessandra took her A-levels at St Aiden's sixth-form in Harrogate.

She achieved good grades but has already decided to work full-time instead of going to university.

Toni who is eighteen and from Benfleet took A-levels in maths, further maths, accounting and performance studies.

She got an A, two Cs and a D. Her results were not as good as she was hoping and she will not be heading to her first choice of university.
