| Some of the best schools ![]() Chris Woodhead: "Standards improving" The annual report for 1999 from the head of the Office for Standards in Education in England, Chris Woodhead, lists some 270 schools which are improving or achieving high performance. The lists do not mean that these are, overall, the best schools in the country in Ofsted's view - they are the best of the 4,500 or so visited during the 1998/99 round of inspections. News Online is publishing the names of all the schools, and there are interviews with headteachers from schools in each category. Credit is also given to the 226 schools which improved sufficiently to be removed from special measures - that is, no longer deemed to be failing to provide a satisfactory education - during the year. The schools are listed alphabetically by name within each group, along with the name of their local education authority.
Praise goes to 80 secondary schools with excellent inspection reports - such as Brookfield Community School, Chesterfield.
The Netherhall School in Cambridge is on a list of 29 secondary schools highlighted by Ofsted for showing excellent improvement.
Almost 100 nursery, middle and primary schools are deemed to be particularly successful - among them, Easington Lane Primary School, Houghton le Spring.
Ofsted lists 40 primary schools that have done particularly well since their first inspection - including Allanson Street Primary School, Parr.
The Pendlebury Centre pupil referral unit in Stockport is one of the 25 special schools commended by Ofsted.
During the year 226 schools were no longer judged to be failing to provide a satisfactory education - among them, Hare Street County Junior School, Harlow. | See also: Top Hot Topics stories now: Links to more Hot Topics stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
