Many people will reduce their work hours to be with the children

Working parents expected to spend �50 on childcare per week, according to YouGov research for Abbey bank.

A fifth of parents expected to spend up to �100 a week, and 13% even more.

In addition, they were anticipating spending �35 a week keeping each child entertained.

State schools in Scotland are now starting their long summer holiday. In England and Wales the break starts in two or three weeks' time.

More than a third of the 351 parents questioned (38%) would be arranging for family or friends to look after their children during the six-week break.

A quarter would reduce their own working hours while one in 10 would stop working altogether.

One in three had savings to cover the additional costs of childcare, trips out and holidays.

Some 27% intended to use a credit card and 14% expected financial help from their families.
