'Failing' schools rise to the top

Ofsted has rated 457 schools and colleges as "outstanding"
Six formerly struggling schools in England have made it onto the annual list of "outstanding" schools published by the education watchdog Ofsted.

The six primaries had been found to be below standard in previous inspections.

But they are now among 457 schools and colleges singled out in Ofsted's list of leading institutions, based on inspections carried out in 2004-05.

Some 24 schools on the list have been labelled "outstanding" for a third consecutive time.

These include 11 secondary schools, seven primaries, three special schools and three nursery schools.

A further 78 schools and colleges have been recognised as outstanding twice.

The 457 highlighted schools and colleges stood out among the 2,878 institutions inspected in 2004-05 as offering an excellent quality of education and high levels of pupil achievement.

Once struggling, now shining

The chief inspector of schools in England, David Bell, said six of the outstanding schools were previously subject to special measures, had serious weaknesses or had been designated as underachieving by inspectors.

The schools - Woodberry Down Community Primary School, in Hackney, London; Woodhouse Close Junior School, in Bishop Auckland, County Durham; Kimberley Primary School, Nottinghamshire; Bletchingdon Parochial Church of England Primary School, Oxfordshire; Broadwater Church of England First and Middle School, West Sussex; and Mossley Primary School, Walsall - were singled out for specific praise.

"It is a remarkable achievement to have gone from this position to become an outstanding school and I congratulate these six schools on the significant progress they have made," said Mr Bell.

He applauded the head teachers, staff, governors and pupils or students of all the successful institutions.

"All those on the list have characteristics that distinguish outstanding education and training," he said.

"They have strong, dynamic leadership and excellent or very good teaching that results in pupils or students making progress and achieving very well."

This list shows schools identified twice and three times as outstanding by Ofsted inspectors. Clicking the name of any school will take you to its most recent inspection report on the Ofsted website.
