Independent schools have improved their average scores

Winchester College has taken first place among independent schools in this year's A level results.

In performance tables published by the Independent Schools Information Service, Winchester tops a league table of results in A levels taken this summer in over 500 private schools.

The 600-year-old Hampshire public school, which charges over �15,000 a year for boarders, is followed by two London schools - St Paul's and Westminster.

The league table is based on the points system used for university admission - from 10 points for an A grade to two points for an E - with the rankings based on an average score per candidate.

According to ISIS, the overall average points score for all independent schools in the survey shows an improvement compared with last year - from 21.83 to 22.18.

The number of entries at independent schools gaining an A grade in A levels has also increased, from 33.5% last year to 34.8% - almost double the national average.

Among other famous independent schools appearing in the top 30 are Eton College, Manchester Grammar School and Cheltenham Ladies College - one of many girls' schools in the upper levels of the league table.
