UCL was ranked fifth in the paper's league table of universities - based on teaching excellence, degree results, dropout rates and graduate employment.

But it was awarded the overall prize in recognition of its sustained academic excellence and the fact its graduates top a table for best starting salaries.

Cambridge topped the league table for the seventh year, with Oxford second.
