Thousands of children effected
Hundreds of thousands of children have missed school because of the snow and icy conditions.

Around 4,100 schools have been closed across the UK because of the adverse weather.

Worst hit were Scotland, the north-east of England and the English Midlands.

Some schools have had to make special arrangements for pupils doing A-level modules.

Up to 60,000 children were sent home from school as snow hit the North East on Wednesday.

Almost 50 schools in the region remained closed on Thursday.

Exams

In Scotland, about 500 schools are closed affecting more than 100,000 pupils.

In the West Midlands, at least 1,000 schools are closed including 470 in Birmingham.

In southern England more than 200 schools are closed in Hertfordshire and more than 100 in Essex.

In Kent a further 120 are closed.

A small number of schools are closed in central London.

In Wales, northern areas have been worst affected and a few schools have been closed.

Some modular A-levels have been taking place despite the closures.
