Teachers want terror alert system

Schools could be warned ahead of potential attacks
An emergency communications system should be set up to warn schools about potential terrorist attacks, Britain's biggest teaching union has said.

The NUT says head teachers should have pagers, to allow the police to issue instant security updates.

The Metropolitan Police are already considering proposals to improve communications with schools close to potential targets in central London.

The NUT has welcomed the scheme for the capital, but wants it to be extended.

Public safety

The scheme would rely on pagers, as mobile phones are considered inadequate for the job.

It is feared they could stop working in the aftermath of a terrorist attack.

The National Union of Teachers says schools across the UK need access to the scheme, which could help them prepare for an attack in their area.

It says the system could also be used by police should they need to warn schools about other potential public safety issues.
