| Wednesday, 29 January, 2003, 16:31 GMT Bollywood star promotes India ![]() Honey Kalaria's tour backed by government A star of Bollywood films is helping to promote awareness of Indian culture with a government-backed tour of schools. Following the recent success of the West End musical Bombay Dreams, Honey Kalaria will discuss aspects of life including dress, customs and history. Known as a "Bollywood ambassador", she is due to visit 20 schools by the end of February. Creative skills Arts minister Baroness Blackstone said: "It is very exciting to see a dynamic young artist like Honey bringing popular Indian culture and dance into schools. "These experiences help children to develop their own creative skills and appreciation, but are also valuable in raising self-esteem and improving engagement within school. "I hope it will stimulate their enthusiasm and encourage them to learn more about Indian dance" Children will wear saris and other traditional dress, such as ankle bells and hair jewellery. Ms Kalaria, also a choreographer and television presenter, will then take them through the moves used in Bollywood films. Bollywood boom It is hoped this will further increase the popularity of Indian culture beyond the Asian community. During the last year, Bollywood films and associated events have soared in popularity. Bombay Dreams, the first West End show to feature a cast that is 90% British Asian, has taken more than 10m since it opened in the West End last October, attracting around 350,000 visitors. | Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Education stories now: Links to more Education stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
