Children in English-speaking schools in Wales could soon be learning PE and other subjects in Welsh.

The Welsh Assembly's education committee is putting the idea forward as a way of encouraging people to speak Welsh.

They say more pupils should learn drama, PE, art and music through the language in both primary and secondary schools.

Children attending state schools in Wales already have to learn Welsh up to GCSE level, and Welsh medium schools conduct all lessons through the language.

The chairman of the assembly's education committee, Gareth Jones, explained why the new proposal was being made.

"We are very concerned that Welsh becomes the language of the school," he said.

"If it is to thrive and survive, it has to become the language of the community."

Crazy suggestion

The plan has been attacked by Conservative AM David Davies.

"I'm totally against that crazy suggestion," he said.

"It would cause resentment in anglicised areas like my Monmouthshire constituency and it would be unworkable.

"It's already very difficult to find teachers for children to learn Welsh up to GCSE level and that policy has been a great failure.

"You have children who don't want to learn Welsh sitting in class with very motivated ones who do."

The proposals will go before the assembly's culture committee on Thursday.
