Thursday, August 27, 1998 Published at 13:43 GMT 14:43 UK Education Subject by subject What every pupil wants to see: lots of A grades with stars The table below gives the provisional GCSE results for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
There was a drop of 62,081 in the number of papers sat this year as opposed to last.
Apparently big changes in the numbers of candidates are usually accounted for by changes in the subject headings. Entires in design and technology have increased substantially - it is now a compulsory subject in the National Curriculum in England. This rise offsets the big drop in entries for similar subjects such as home economics.
After the name of each subject is the number of entries then on the next line the proportions awarded pass grades A* to G and grade U (fail). The figures in brackets are the equivalent provisional statistics from last year.
