Chelsea majored in history at Stanford University

Chelsea is taking a two-year taught Master of Philosophy in International Relations.

She follows in the footsteps of her father, who studied politics at University College between 1968 and 1970.

A spokeswoman for Oxford University said Chelsea and her father had flown in from the United States and had come straight to the university where Chelsea would be starting a programme of induction.

The spokeswoman confirmed that security measures were in place and that the university had taken advice from British and American advisors.

"Chelsea hopes to integrate into the normal student body just as other students do and get on with it," she said.

The Master of University College, Lord Butler of Brockwell, said he was delighted that Chelsea Clinton was studying at his college.

"Her record at Stanford shows that she is a very well-qualified and able student.

"The college is also pleased to extend its link with the Clinton family," he said.

Chelsea graduated this summer from Stanford University in California where she majored in history.

As part of her degree, she completed a 150-page thesis on her father's mediation of the 1998 Northern Ireland peace agreement.

Unlike her father, she did not apply to Oxford through the Rhodes Scholarship scheme.
