Staffordshire University said she was being recognised as a trustee of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, which encourages black and disadvantaged students into education and particularly architecture, her son's chosen profession. Mrs Lawrence will receive her honorary degree at an award ceremony in Stoke-on-Trent next month. Other recipients include the BBC Radio 4 Today programme presenter Sue MacGregor, poet Benjamin Zephaniah, and former Great Britain 800m and 1500m runner Steve Cram. Stephen, 18, was stabbed to death in April 1993 by a gang of white youths as he waited for a bus in Eltham, south-east London. Architecture scholarships At the time he was studying for his A-levels and was on a work placement with a firm of architects. The trust set up by his parents provides bursaries for architecture students from Britain, the West Indies and South Africa. The Prince of Wales later launched a scholarship to try to open up architecture to the ethnic minorities, in memory of Stephen Lawrence. His Foundation for Architecture and the Urban Environment pays about �10,000 a year to fund an ethnic minority student through architectural school. The Royal Institute of British Architects awards an annual prize in Stephen Lawrence's name, sponsored by the Goldschmied Trust. |
