| Saturday, 30 September, 2000, 04:52 GMT 05:52 UK Miners face compensation deadline ![]() Miners developed the disease after operating heavy, vibrating machinery Thousands of former coal miners are rushing to make compensation claims for a condition known as vibration white finger. One hundred thousand have already applied - many in the last two months - but Saturday is the deadline for further claims. Some miners are angry at the imposition of a cut-off date, but the government says it is necessary to get a true picture of how many people will claim. Some solicitors' offices in South Wales are staying open until 1700 BST on Saturday to accept claims.
It restricts blood supply to the fingers and is particularly triggered by the cold. It is caused by operating heavy vibrating machinery, such as drills. It affects the blood circulation and causes numbness and tingling sensations. It can lead to disabling pain and whitening of the fingers and some sufferers can lose the use of their hands. The government has set aside a 100m to pay for legal fees across the UK. It estimates that lawyers will earn an average of 1,500 for each successful claim. |
