Protest against lake speed limit
Toruists at Lake Windermere
Lake Windermere is a popular spot for watersports
More than 4,000 protesters have taken to the water to rally against a new speed limit on Lake Windermere which they say will "cripple" local business.

Campaigners are angry at the decision to impose a 10mph limit on one of the Lake District's most popular activity spots, which would put an end to waterskiing and speed boats.

They voted with their keels to show their disapproval of the decision

Norman Park, protester
Boat-owners and local business people took part in the mass protest, which was staged in boats, arguing the lake is dependent on the revenue generated from water sport enthusiasts.

Councillors say the new by-law, which will be imposed in five years' time, is designed to stop fast power boats and jetskis taking over the famous inland water.

Speaking on Windermere, protester Norman Park, 43, who coordinated the rally, said: "We had well in excess of 250 boats on the lake.

"The procession was three miles long. It was a magnificent turn out by the people who use the lake.

"They voted with their keels to show their disapproval of the decision."

Mr Park said many businesses did not believe the new limit would ever be passed because so many people were against it.

But he added: "Our jobs are being legislated out of existence because of a voiced minority."

The speed limit does not come into effect in March 2005.
