British Airways planes are parked near Heathrow Airport's Terminal 4 after cabin crew walked out on the first day of a three-day strike.
BA staff leave Terminal 5 at Heathrow, as the airline announced 1,100 flights had been cancelled out of 1,950 scheduled services on the first day of the walkout.
At Gatwick, all long-haul flights and more than half of short-haul flights were expected to operate as normal, while at Heathrow, more than 60% of long-haul flights and 30% of short-haul flights were expected to operate.
About 200 Unite members took part in a rally at Bedfont Football Club, next to Heathrow, to protest over BA's cutbacks.
Unite and BA have been in negotiations for months. Unite members are angry at job losses and a planned two-year pay freeze. After recording a loss of �342m, BA says it needs to cut costs in order to survive.
A further four-day walkout is planned from 27 March.
