As of Friday, Altnaharra holds the prize for the lowest temperature during the current cold spell while Westgate in the Pennines has seen the most snow outside the Cairngorms.
The Federation of Small Businesses says that one in 10 people missed work in the week because of the weather. The full cost to the economy remains to be seen but early estimates set the figure at �700m.
With so much salt being used on the nation's roads to help keep the traffic moving there were fears that supplies could run out. To make it go further some local authorities began spreading grit more thinly.
As temperatures plunged the demand for gas soared. On Thursday, the National Grid said that the previous record high of 449m cubic metres, set in January 2003, had been broken.
As thousands of schools closed head teachers were accused of shutting up too readily by business leaders who feared lost work days with staff struggling to find child care. Few complaints were heard from students.
