People in Cockermouth, Cumbria, are starting to assess the damage caused by the floods.
Water levels rose to almost 8ft (2.5m) on the worst affected streets in Cockermouth and two bridges in the area collapsed.
The clean-up is now beginning. Fire crews were called in from surrounding towns to help pump water out of flooded homes and get trapped householders out.
Residents were reunited with their pets which were rescued by RSPCA officers after being stranded for two days.
The severity of the floods meant people were forced to leave their homes. Seventy five people took refuge at Cockermouth School and the Cockermouth Sheep and Wool Centre.
Streets are lined with displaced items from homes and businesses including wool, tills and bookcases. It is unknown when some people will be allowed back into their homes.
Water levels are now starting to recede after Friday's record-breaking downpour.
About 1,200 homes in the area lost power on Thursday night.
The Environment Agency said the level of rain was a 'once in a thousand years' event.
Bridges have been closed for safety reasons. Here, police officers stand in front of a tree which was washed down the river and collided with a bridge on the High Street.
