| Saturday, 25 April, 1998, 12:01 GMT 13:01 UK Diana's brother attacks 'tasteless' charity ![]() Earl Spencer is reported to say the fund is tasteless and degrading Princess Diana's brother, Earl Spencer, has written to the trustees of her memorial fund, asking them to set a date to wind it up. The Earl thinks some of the fund's activities have been degrading to his sister's memory. Earl Spencer suggested to his sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, who is president of the fund, that one possible date to call a halt would be August 31, 2000, the third anniversary of the Princess's death, the report says. From such a fixed date the fund should turn away donations and suggest those wanting to give money or arrange merchandising deals should contact charities Diana supported. Lady Sarah is said to have told her brother that the fund cannot stop work when it is receiving more than 1m a week.
The Times quotes Earl Spencer's aide as saying: "He fears the fund is never going to stop and the idea of it going on and on making money out of the Princess's name is certainly not what she would have wanted." The report came as the trustees announced they have temporarily stopped considering grant applications after being inundated with thousands of requests. Earl Spencer has made no secret of his unhappiness at some of the fundraising activities the trustees have approved. These include promoting lottery scratchcards and allowing Diana's signature to be used on tubs of margarine in connection with charity runners in Sunday's London Marathon. |
