Newspaper faces phone tapping claims

There are claims the News of the World has been involved in the illegal tapping of phone calls of up to 3,000 people, including some of the biggest names in politics, entertainment and a rival newspaper editor.

According to the Guardian newspaper, the News of the World has paid out over £1m to settle cases out of court.

At the time the editor of the News of the World was Andy Coulson, who is now the Conservative Party communications director.
