Michael Shields interviewed in 2006

Liverpool fan Michael Shields, who was jailed in Bulgaria for attempted murder, has been refused a pardon by Justice Secretary Jack Straw.

The 18-year-old had been holidaying in the Black Sea resort of Varna in May 2005 after watching his team beat AC Milan in the Champions League Final in Istanbul.

Shields was convicted after barman Martin Georgiev had a rock dropped on his head - but he has always maintained his innocence.

Before he was transferred back to a UK prison in 2006, Judith Moritz spoke to Shields in his Bulgarian jail about the night in question.
