The former South African president was honoured at a special BT Ethnic Multi-cultural Media Award (Emma) ceremony in London. Mr Mandela, 82, told dignitaries at the South African High Commission: "I am sure that I can speak for all South Africans, black and white, that this award is recognition of their struggle for peace and democracy in our country.
"I have gone right around the world and I've had many enjoyable occasions and therefore this is a very important occasion." Presenting the award, Mrs Lawrence told Mr Mandela: "I hold you very dear to me. Back in 1993 just after my son was killed you were the only one with any stature who recognised the plight of my family and for that I'm extremely grateful. "Because after that it went on to six years of struggle and we had the inquiry and changes that have taken place. "I believe if I hadn't met you on June 6, 1993 that would never have taken place and I want to thank you for that." 'Inspiration' Prime Minister Tony Blair also paid tribute to Mr Mandela, a Nobel Peace prize winner, saying: "He's achieved so much, touched so many people and shown such leadership and courage. "But at the same time he has never lost his compassion, humility and common humanity. He's an inspiration to us all." The main award ceremony was held in May. Spice Girl Mel B was named public figure of the year for promoting Aids awareness; The Voice won the best publication award; and spoof presenter Ali G won the television entertainment award. Mr Mandela said the Emmas were a great initiative that acknowledged the expertise and contribution of the recipients. |
