Children's Secretary Ed Balls has announced changes to child protection measures in England following Lord Laming's damning report into the system.

The President of the Association of Directors of Children's Services says he is hopeful the action plan will provide "additional support for social workers on the front line".

Kim Bromley-Derry said that with 30,000 child protection plans in place, "we can't always prevent tragic circumstances, but we can make sure the system doesn't contribute to them".
