The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, is set to deliver his budget on Wednesday, in the middle of a deep recession and the most serious financial crisis since the 1930s.
The Chancellor is expected to tell MPs that government borrowing has soared to a record high and the economy is shrinking at its fastest pace since World War II.
