Both Severn bridges and the M4 were closed after five car windscreens were smashed by sheets of falling ice.
Metre square sheets of ice fell from overhead gantry signs on the second Severn crossing at 1000 GMT, forcing the first closure for weather in 13 years.
Wyre Davies on the M4 near Newport and John Maguire on the English side of the Bridge described the scene.
