Many people around Britain woke up to winter weather with snow and freezing rain affecting much of Scotland and parts of northern and eastern England.
Arctic winds lowered temperatures overnight to below freezing point in many areas and some roads were closed including the M62 near Manchester.

Forecasts say the snow will be replaced by rain and blustery winds but icy conditions could remain where snow stays on the ground.
