Social housing 'meltdown' warning

Five million people will need help finding a home by 2010, leaving local councils struggling to cope, according to the Local Government Association.

It says an increase in repossessions and unemployment could push the system into meltdown, and predicts an extra one million people will join the queue for council or housing association properties over the next two years.
