How to stop junk mail

A government-commissioned report has said councils should be banned from selling edited versions of electoral rolls to firms which can use them to send junk mail. But how do you stop unwanted post? There are several organisations and websites where you can look for help:

The Mail Preference Service is endorsed by Royal Mail and gives customers a choice of stopping the majority of junk mail.

Customers who want to stop unaddressed post being delivered through their letterbox by Royal Mail their call helpline on 08457 950 950.

The Direct Marketing Association can help limit the amount of junk mail for those who sign up with it. They operate a series of lists and directories of those who do not want to receive direct mail, faxes or phone calls.

If a direct marketer keeps sending junk, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, which has imposed fines on some mailers.
