Jockey Darren Williams was seen leaving a pub carrying a white envelope after a meeting with professional gambler Miles Rodgers, the Old Bailey has heard.

Mr Williams's home was raided the next day and police found a white envelope under his mattress, jurors were told.

Mr Williams had lost a race on the previous day, winning Mr Rodgers 16,556, prosecutors added.

Six defendants including Mr Williams and Mr Rodgers deny conspiracy to defraud customers of Betfair.

Detective Constable Steve Woods told jurors that he saw Mr Rodgers, Mr Williams and Karl Burke, a trainer, at a table at the Bridge Inn, Walshford, North Yorkshire, in July, 2004.

Sitting nearby, he heard the words "Great Yarmouth", "seven lengths" and "seventy-seven grand", he told the court.

Mr Woods said: "They all left together. In the car park, I observed that Williams had a white envelope in his left hand."

The six defendants deny conspiring with others between December 2002 and September 2004 to defraud online betting exchange Betfair customers and other punters by plotting to fix 27 races.

Mr Fallon, 42, formerly of Newmarket, Suffolk, but now of Tipperary, Ireland, is on trial with fellow jockeys Fergal Lynch, 29, of Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire, and Darren Williams, 29, of Leyburn, North Yorkshire.

Fergal Lynch's brother Shaun, 38, of Belfast; Mr Rodgers, 38, of Silkstone, South Yorkshire, and Philip Sherkle, 42, of Tamworth, Staffordshire, are also on trial.

Mr Rodgers also denies concealing the proceeds of crime.

The trial continues.
