The Ramblers Association say safe pathways are a basic right

The company applied in May last year for permission to divert a bridleway it says stands in the way of development at its plant in Cowley, Oxfordshire.

The Ramblers Association said the alternative route - alongside a congested ring road - is unacceptable.

BMW says about 400 people a day use the path, most of whom are its own staff.

The walkers' advocacy group said the footpath should remain untouched and that safe pathways are a basic right which cannot be undermined by corporations like BMW.

The final stages of what has been described as a David and Goliath legal battle are to unfold at Witney Magistrates' Court.

A decision is expected later.
