Flying is alleged to cause 10 times more climate damage than the train

Greenpeace set up desks at London City, Manchester, Newcastle and Edinburgh airports lobbying people booked on domestic flights.

Campaigners dressed as stewards and stewardesses offered passengers train tickets for their return journey.

Police escorted the campaigners out of London City soon after they started talking to passengers.

The enviromental campaign group accused companies such as British Airways of creating a "binge-flying" culture by aggressively promoting domestic routes.

Greenpeace director John Sauven said: "Planes are 10 times more damaging to the climate than trains.

"if we don't do something about the growth in aviation, Britain will find it very hard to meet its global warming targets.

"We're finding travellers are really interested to hear how polluting flying can be."

A spokeswoman for London City Airport said the protestors had not caused any disruption and had left peacefully when asked by the Metropolitan Police.
