The timing of the couple's split has been the focus of speculation |
Prince William has returned to work after it emerged at the weekend that he had separated from long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton. The prince is at Camp Bovington in Dorset continuing his army training.
His long absences from London as a result of his military career have been blamed for putting pressure on the four-year romance.
The break-up remained front page news in the UK, with papers offering varying accounts of how the couple split.
William, an officer in the Blues and Royals, is training to become an armoured reconnaissance troop leader.
'Single man'
The Daily Mirror reported that William, 24, ended the relationship with Kate, 25, by mobile phone on Wednesday, while the Sun claimed they agreed to separate during a March holiday in the Swiss Alps.
In contrast, the Daily Mail said that William had been "effectively acting as a single man" since February.
Prime Minister Tony Blair had previously said the pair should be "left alone" by the press.
Factors offered to explain the split have included Miss Middleton's background, the Royal Family and the pressure of intense media attention.
It is understood that lawyers acting on behalf of Miss Middleton's family have already asked for the press to leave her and her relatives alone.
She spent the weekend at home with her parents in Berkshire, while William was photographed outside a London nightclub.
